Review of Dereliction of Duty, a novel

Posted April 12, 2012

Review by Susan Hilliard, Writing Resource Inc.

Novel: Dereliction of Duty
Author: Jon Renaud

This was a brilliantly written piece of fiction, action, and suspense that kept me glued to the pages from beginning to end! This novel had me wondering if this story was real instead of a piece of fiction and that’s a true sign of great mastery in the art of writing.

The flow of the story was laid out in a manner that was so easy to read and understand both the storyline and the parts each character played. The storyline lead you to truly care about the main character and hooked into the story. That’s another trait of a well-written book. It makes you feel like you’re part of…

What is the Army CID?

Over the last month, I have received several e-mails asking me what exactly is the Army CID and what do they do?

Click on the magazine cover below to read about the Army CID in Soldiers Magazine:

The most frequently asked question was, is CID like NCIS? I guess because of the popular television show most people are familiar with NCIS, but fewer are actually familiar with the Army CID.

Here is the simplest way I can answer that question, in the large family of Federal Law Enforcement Agencies, NCIS is kind of like the small ugly cousin to the Army CID.

They had not been assigned any missions yet and were both beginning to wonder if the Task Force was actually going to do any real work. Most meetings started and ended the same way. Cummings and Fox spent the first half hour of the meeting discussing the latest intelligence information and the next four or five hours drinking in the lounge.

Today was different; Cummings called earlier in the day and sounded a little concerned when he requested they meet at 6:00 PM in the lounge. Fox was at the table sipping a glass of water when Cummings arrived still dressed in his business suit. Cummings rushed over and dropped down in the chair across from Fox with a serious look.

(Excerpts) The Pitch....(Chapter 2)

The Colonel set the folder on the table, “I asked you here for two reasons. Just this morning, I received the briefing on the operations you and your team conducted in the desert. You did one hell of a job over there.”

“Thank you sir,” responded Fox.

“I'm sorry that most of what you did can't be reported in your official record, but you've been around the Army and CID long enough to know how that goes.”

With a cautious smile Fox agreed, “Sir, those things you got briefed on today, I probably wouldn't want in any official file anyway. I would hate to see a detailed account of my missions on the ACLU website after a Freedom of Information Request.”

“You're probably right,” agr…

BAGHDAD burning, the Air Force relentlessly pounding the city day and night, the lead element of the U.S. Marines prepared to capture their final objective. The Marines fought their way to the outskirts of the capital city and laid waist to everything in their path. The invasion was only four weeks old and the U.S. and allied forces were pouring into Iraq as fast as they could load up on trucks, tanks and helicopters. The invasion was an unprecedented success and America believed the war would end with a quick U.S. victory. Then, the unthinkable happened. A convoy from an under trained and under manned Army reserve unit strayed into a small city in southern Iraq and was ambushed. The unit wa…

Dereliction of Duty is scheduled for released in June 2010.  This was a work in progress for over three years and would not have been possible without the continued encouragement from my dear friend Nancy.  Many thanks!
